Field Studies Council - Discovering Botany

Our very own Karen van Oostrum, well known within Prestwood Nature for her seasonal guided walks, is also an experienced botanist and a very good and engaging teacher. She will be teaching a selection of Botany Courses for the Field Studies Council this year.

Discovering Botany: Field-Centre based (face-to-face learning)

This 2-day course runs from 10am – 4.30pm each day. Delve into the world of Botany with expert guidance, and enjoy the opportunity to get hands-on with flowering plants. As you become familiar with the features of plants from a range of different species, your confidence and ability in using field guides and identification keys will grow.

Discovering Botany: Online learning

In this beginner wildflower online course, you will build your understanding of wildflower basics considering their biology, ecology and the structure of flowering plants and be introduced to the species commonly encountered in the UK.

This 4-week online course requires approximately 2-3 hours of your time each week. The course will run twice this year: choose to start in April or in June. Self-study material is made available online each week, together with a mixture of quizzes and activities to help you develop your understanding of the topic. At the end of each week a live webinar, hosted by Karen, will recap the topics and provide the opportunity for any questions from participants to be answered. Botanical Anatomy: Online learning

In this intermediate wildflower course, you will build your understanding of botanical anatomy, considering the structure and function of leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds, germination and flower fertilisation.

This 3-week online course requires approximately 2-3 hours of your time each week. The course will run twice this year: choose to start in May or late August. Self-study material is made available online each week, together with a mixture of quizzes and activities to help you develop your understanding of the topic. At the end of weeks 1 and 3 a live webinar, hosted by Karen, will recap the topics and provide the opportunity for any questions from participants to be answered.
